Since August 2023, all Singapore-registered vehicles — including rental cars — must have a valid Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) to enter Malaysia. The VEP is a digital permit issued by Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) and is linked to the vehicle's registration number, not the driver. Fresh Cars pre-registers VEP on designated cross-border vehicles, so you can drive into Johor Bahru without any additional application on your part.
VEP Is Vehicle-Specific
The VEP is registered to the car, not the driver. Any licensed driver using a Fresh Cars VEP-ready vehicle can enter Malaysia without additional paperwork.
Notify Us at Booking
Always inform us that you plan to drive to Malaysia when booking. This ensures we assign a VEP-registered vehicle from our fleet, as not all cars carry active VEP status.
What You Need to Bring
Singapore NRIC or passport, valid driving licence, vehicle registration card (provided by Fresh Cars), and the rental agreement. Malaysian customs may request these at the checkpoint.
Fresh Cars rental packages include comprehensive cross-border insurance valid in Peninsular Malaysia. This covers third-party liability, vehicle damage, and passenger protection — the same standards required by Malaysian authorities. You do not need to purchase separate Malaysian car insurance.
Woodlands Checkpoint (Causeway)
Access via BKE or SLE. Most direct route from central Singapore and Jurong/West regions. Typically busier than Tuas, especially on Friday evenings and public holiday eves. Queue times available live on the OneMotoring app and Singapore Customs website.
Tuas Checkpoint (Second Link)
Access via AYE or PIE, connecting to Gelang Patah and Medini in Johor. Generally has shorter queues and is recommended for weekday morning travel. Closer to Legoland and Kota Iskandar areas of JB.
Popular JB destinations reachable by Fresh Cars rental include Johor Bahru City Centre, AEON Tebrau, Paradigm Mall, Legoland Malaysia, Austin Heights, and Medini Iskandar. The drive from Singapore Woodlands to JB City takes approximately 30–60 minutes depending on queue times. Fuel in Malaysia is significantly cheaper than Singapore — plan to refuel before returning.
